How to Prepare for Your Pet’s Discharge After a Hospital Stay
Whether your pet was recovering from surgery, illness, or intensive treatment, bringing them home is a huge relief — and often an emotional moment for both of you.
But going from a fully monitored vet clinic to home care can feel overwhelming.
What should you expect? What do you need to do? How do you help your pet recover smoothly?
At Creature Comforts, we’re here to guide you step by step. Here’s how to get your home (and your heart) ready for your pet’s return.
🧸 1. Create a Calm, Safe Recovery Space
Your pet will need plenty of rest. Set up a quiet spot away from noise, stairs, and slippery floors.
✔ Use soft bedding, blankets, or their favourite crate
✔ Keep food, water, and litter trays close by
✔ Limit access to other pets or children for the first few days
💡 For cats, consider a room with dim lighting and easy-to-reach surfaces. For dogs, a playpen or baby gate can help limit movement without feeling confined.
💊 2. Follow the Medication Plan Closely
You’ll receive clear instructions on what to give, when, and how.
✔ Set reminders for medication times
✔ Use pill pockets or mix with food (if allowed)
✔ Never adjust the dose without checking with your vet
If your pet refuses meds or seems off, contact us — we’ll help troubleshoot and adjust if needed.
🔄 3. Know What’s “Normal” After Hospitalization
Some pets may be groggy, eat less, or sleep more in the first 24–48 hours — that’s okay.
However, contact us if you notice:
🚩 Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
🚩 Difficulty breathing
🚩 Refusal to eat or drink for more than 24 hours
🚩 Worsening pain or lethargy
🚩 Bleeding or swelling near a surgery site
🩹 4. Monitor Healing Sites & Bandages
If your pet had surgery or IV access, you’ll need to:
✔ Keep the area dry and clean
✔ Prevent licking with a cone or medical shirt
✔ Watch for redness, swelling, or discharge
Don’t remove any bandages or stitches unless instructed. If something seems off, snap a photo and contact us.
📞 5. Stay in Touch With Us
Before discharge, we’ll schedule any needed follow-ups and let you know how to reach us if you’re worried.
💬 You’re never on your own — we’re just a call or message away.
📦 Ask us about:
• Home delivery of medications or prescription food
• Nurse visits (if needed)
• WhatsApp updates for continued support
